DTF heat transfer label and offset heat transfer label are two commonly used thermal transfer processes, widely applied in the printing of products like clothing, especially T-shirts. They may seem very similar, but they possess distinct technical processes and characteristics.

Process Principle

DTF Heat Transfer: The pattern is directly printed on a PET film using a DTF printer. Then, hot-melt adhesive powder is sprinkled on the film, which is cured by baking. After that, a heat press is used to transfer the pattern onto the fabric at a temperature of 150-180℃.

Offset Heat Transfer: Typically, the pattern is printed on release agent-coated paper or PET release film through four-color (CMYK) overprinting. Then, a heat press is used to stamp the image onto the fabric at a temperature of over 100℃, utilizing the hot-melt adhesive on the reverse side of the pattern.

Pattern Precision and Color Performance

DTF Heat Transfer: It adopts high-precision inkjet technology, with a pattern precision of up to 1440 dpi. It offers rich colors, including 16 million colors plus a 10% fluorescent color extension. The white ink has strong covering power, enabling clear and vivid patterns to be displayed on dark-colored fabrics.

Offset Heat Transfer: It uses CMYK four-color dot printing for color matching, featuring high clarity with an image line count of over 175 lines. It can replicate digital photo effects with high color restoration. However, an additional white base treatment may be required for dark-colored fabrics.

Applicable Fabrics

DTF Heat Transfer: It has strong compatibility and is suitable for various materials such as cotton, linen, polyester, leather, and silicone. It can even fit perfectly on curved surfaces.

Offset Heat Transfer: It is mainly applied to ready-made garments and various high-temperature-resistant fabrics, such as those used for luggage, handbags, advertising T-shirts, and cultural T-shirts.

Hand Feel and Texture

DTF Heat Transfer: The hot-melt adhesive layer is approximately 0.05mm thick, providing a relatively soft hand feel. However, large-area prints may have a slight granular texture.

Offset Heat Transfer: After stamping, the surface of the pattern is smooth with a rubber-like feel, and the hand feel is relatively harder, but the overall texture is good.

Production Efficiency and Cost

DTF Heat Transfer: No plate-making is required, and the production process is simple. Cold peeling only takes 8-10 seconds, making it suitable for small-batch customization with relatively low comprehensive costs.

Offset Heat Transfer: Traditional offset heat transfer requires the production of physical templates such as film negatives and screen plates, resulting in a long production cycle and high costs. However, for mass production, the cost per printed piece may decrease after cost allocation.

Both of these processes are relatively low-cost and are typically used for printing on T-shirts for promotions, advertising, souvenirs, and street culture. They are not suitable for high-end brand display.

For high-end brand logos, silicone or TPU heat transfer should be used instead.

  • Tactile Hand-Feel: Offset heat transfers generally produce an ultra-thin, incredibly smooth, and soft “invisible” feel on the garment because the ink layers are pressed flat. DTF transfers contain a slightly thicker layer consisting of white backing ink and hot-melt powder, resulting in a slightly more rubbery, elastic feel that remains durable and stretch-resistant.
